Cornwall Light & Power has begun decommissioning turbines at the ageing Goonhilly Downs wind farm, the first in a wave of repowering schemes.
The pioneering onshore wind project installed in Cornwall in the early 1990s will be the first to get modern hardware. CLP has switched off 10 of the 14 Windane 400kW machines at Goonhilly. Sub-contractor AG Windpower is removing blades and nacelles.
After towers are dismantled the concrete foundations will be cut down to a metre below ground level to allow for site reinstatement. Nearly all the new foundations have been dug and poured ahead of delivery of six Vestas V80s towards the end of next month.
